A Novel Sliding Desk

This week we've been making and fitting the pull out writing desk.  We wanted a way to enable there to be a flat surface right to the back of the cabinet (rather than a step where the desk meets the shelf), and came up with a neat mechanism to accomplish this.  This gives two positions for the desk - lowered, which is ideal for use with a computer keyboard, and raised, which is a better height for writing and enables you to easily spread things out.  As with most good things, the mechanism is very simple - just a ramp acting on a bar at the back of the desk, with some guides to prevent the whole thing skewing, but it has a nice, satisfying action to it....

This is the desk in the closed position....

...which then pulls out with a brass handle.

You can then tilt it up...

 ...pull it forward...

...and push it back where it locks into place.
